Guyana is an Amerindian word meaning “land of many waters.” The country is often referred to as the bridge between the Caribbean and South America. It borders Brazil, Venezuela, Suriname, and the Atlantic Ocean in the north. The country has a diverse population of 700,000, originating from India, Africa, China, and Europe, as well as those indigenous to the South American continent.

Georgetown

Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America. The country has four distinct geographical areas: The coastal belt, the forest region, the savannah zone, and the sandy zone.

Georgetown, the chief port and capital, is located on the right bank of the Demerara River estuary. It was named after the British took the area from the Dutch in 1812. The name originated from Fort St. George, which was established at the mouth of the Demerara River as a signal station for the purpose of observing and controlling incoming and outgoing traffic. Most of the streets of the capital "Garden City" are laid out in an almost perfect rectangle–a legacy of the Dutch.
